Benioff and Weiss Drop Star Wars Trilogy For Netflix

And another one (two?) bites the dust. It seems Game of Thrones’ David Benioff and DB Weiss have left their Star Wars trilogy for a $200 million project at Netflix, citing schedule difficulties.

Announced back in February 2018, the duo were to write and produce a three film project, shrouded in mystery and right off the heels of their Game of Thrones success, but before the series ended amongst a plethora of negative fan reactions. Now it seems as if the two join the ranks Colin Trevorrow and Josh Trank, who have all had Star Wars projects canceled for one reason nor another.

There are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects,” they said in a statement to Deadline on Tuesday. “So we are regretfully stepping away.

We love Star Wars. When George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said: “David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers. We hope to include them in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars.”

Either way, with Disney+ on the horizon, it seems as if Netflix is calling this a win against the House of Mouse.
