A while ago, Dr. Who star, Matt Smith was rumored to be playing an unconfirmed role in The Rise of Skywalker, and now we may have a little more confidence in saying that he is part of the cast, but who is he playing?
Variety posted a story back in August, 2018, saying Smith was rumored to be cast in The Rise of Skywalker but then his involvement was shot down by Smith, himself in this interview by The LA Times. When asked about his involvement, Smith replied,
“As far as I can tell, I’m definitely not” – Matt Smith
While The Rise of Skywalker teaser had not been released at Star Wars Celebration yet, rumors of Smith playing a young Palpatine were running rampant online. Now, according to Fanthatracks, we might be able to say that Smith was playing the Lucasfilm game of not lying, but not exactly telling the truth either.
While this may not be the best kind of proof, it is interesting enough to add more speculation to the fire that Matt Smith is in The Rise of Skywalker…so who is he playing?
My guess is Palpatine in a flashback, or Forceback, if you will, possibly to his younger years when he killed Darth Plageuis in his sleep. Ironic. Personally, I don’t think we will see Palpatine resurrected, in the flesh. It seems more logical to think that he’ll be a flashback involving Smith or a hologram.
Whatever the case, I would say that speculation for this movie is at an all-time high, especially after JJ Abrams teased us with that Palpatine laugh at the end of the teaser.
As always, this is all speculation until Disney confirms, but probably won’t. Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker releases December 2019.
