Obi Wan TV Series Announcement at Celebration Chicago?

While many of you might dismiss this article and call it clickbait, I have good reason to suspect that we may receive a surprise announcement of an Obi Wan TV series at next week’s Star Wars Celebration Chicago. Hear me out.

Rumors about an Obi Wan spinoff film have been floating around ever since the acquisition of Lucasfilm by Disney back in October 2012. Star Wars fans want to see Ewan McGregor reprise his role from the prequels and we know that we came close to having that wish fulfilled when the rumors hit a peak back in February of this year when Starwarsnews.net told us that the Kenobi spinoff film was no more and that Lucasfilm was looking to making a TV series about him instead.

When Solo underperformed at the box office in late 2018, Lucasfilm scrapped the Obi Wan spinoff film and began production on The Mandalorian, which has gained quite a bit of excitement, and I’d be willing to bet that it’s a lot more than Episode IX. Given that we are still a ways from the Benioff/Weiss trilogy and even further from the Rian Johnson trilogy, it seems that at this point Lucasfilm doesn’t really seem to be focused on making feature films lately.

Which brings me to my speculation: The 20th anniversary panel for The Phantom Menace will take place at Star Wars Celebration on its last day, Monday, April 15th after most people have gone home. We already know that Ahmed Best, Ian McDiarmid and Ray Park will be attending Celebration, signing autographs and taking photos with fans. We can also assume that they will be on hand for The Phantom Menace panel as well. Duh.

With no other Phantom Menace actors supposedly in attendance, Lucasfilm very well may just trot out Ewan McGregor sometime in the panel as a special surprise guest, if only just to announce an Obi Wan spinoff TV series to wrap up the event and get set the internet ablaze.

Clearly, Lucasfilm wouldn’t release any casting or other production details because it’s just too early, but Ewan could just announce it but what better way to end Celebration than on a high note like that?

Because the closing ceremonies never deliver like they say they will.

An Obi Wan series could be made quickly and on the cheap and be ready for Disney+ by fall of 2020. Many have suggested that Lucasfilm making an Obi Wan spinoff film, let alone a TV series would be hard-pressed for stort content and I disagree. In the Expanded Universe, Obi Wan has been known to look after child Luke during his solitude on Tatooine and managed to ruffle Uncle Owen’s feathers enough to make him dislike Obi Wan. We could easily wrap up the Maul/Crimson Dawn storyline by introducing Maul sometime after we saw him in Solo and Star Wars Rebels just before finding Kenobi on Tatooine and having their last showdown. Whew!

At this point, I think most fans would go crazy if Ewan announced the spinoff series to be true and if I’m wrong, I’m wrong and most of the fun about Star Wars is the anticipation and speculation.

Either way, we are less than a week away from pure Star Wars joy at Celebration Chicago!
