Although he will not be doing the entire score, maestro, John Williams will contribute a theme to the Solo spin off film.
An article from Variety claims that Williams will be back a ninth time to score the theme to the spin off film due this May. The character of Han Solo will now have a theme to associate with, which is odd considering he never had a theme in any of the other Star Wars films he has been in. John Powell who has scored a hand full of animated films for Dreamworks as well as The Bourne trilogy has already been chosen to write the film’s score.
Williams told Variety, “The present plan is that I’m writing a theme for Han Solo, and John Powell is going to write the score, which he’ll do brilliantly.”
“His assignment is something I’m very happy about,” Williams adds. “What I will do is offer this to John, and to [director] Ron Howard, and if all parties are happy with it, then I will be happy. … John [Powell] will complete the score. He will write all the rest of the themes and all of the other material, which I’m going to be very anxious to hear.”
Either way, Star Wars fans will welcome new material from John Williams…and then complain about it. Truthfully, with all of the history and buzz about the film, the music will probably be the best thing about it.
The film, directed by
Phil Lord and Chris Miller Ron Howard hits theaters May 25, 2018.
