After the success of the 25 issue story of Marvel’s first DARTH VADER comic from writer Kieron Gillen, they decided to return to a solo act of the Sith Lord. The first series took place between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back; it includes some pretty awesome stories and art (including the debut of new fan favorite Doctor Aphra).
This new story takes place immediately after Revenge of the Sith. After the fall of the Jedi and the death of Padme, Vader begins his new lift as the Sith lord. Vader is sent on a mission by Palpatine to find and confront a Jedi to obtain his crystal and create his new lightsaber. This leads to his arrival on a planet in the Mid Rim region where he must first re-capture a starship supplied by the Emperor.
Palpatine leaves Vader to his own accords and says “Embrace the dark side. Bend it to your will, and it will provide everything you need.” a statement to clarify that the dark side of the force is meant to be bent based on his will and power. Something that was driven into Anakin’s mind that convinced him to join the dark side. This is an interesting story to take on, and I’m excited to see where this story is going. The legend of Vader has only been seen in the original trilogy and the droll worthy moment in Rogue One. Some criticize the story of Anakin becoming Darth Vader in the prequels, it wasn’t enough of story to see the true side of Vader, and I’m looking forward to seeing it unfold in this new comic.
The story sets up perfectly after Anakin’s full transformation to the dark lord we all know and love/fear. His first actions are an unleash of pure force (as seen above) that catches Palpatine off guard, throwing him into the wall, what follows is Palpatine reacting excitingly, forcing lighting Vader for his actions. This is followed by public announcement by Mas Amedda, regarding the Jedi’s betrayal and attempted assassination of Palpatine; and also shows the destruction of Jedi lightsabers (including Yoda’s – a little surprised that Palpatine didn’t keep as a trophy).
This all leads to Palpatine’s exiling Vader to his own path. The story is short, but written well by Charles Soule, and drawn fantastically by Giuseppe Camuncoli. It’s only the first chapter in this story, but it’s making me crave more. I never realized I wanted this story this much until I read that first issue. I’m excited to see where this goes, who will Vader run into? Will it tie into REBELS or eventually ROGUE ONE? I guess we’ll wait and see. And once the story continues, I’ll get more in dept in the reviews and analyzing.
